What is a bond beam?

A bond beam is a reinforced concrete element used to connect masonry walls to ensure stability and resistance to lateral forces such as earthquakes and wind. It is typically placed at the top of a masonry wall or at any level where the wall changes direction. Bond beams consist of steel reinforcement bars and concrete, which is poured into a wooden or metal formwork to create a continuous beam around the perimeter of the wall. The beam helps distribute loads evenly and creates a strong connection between masonry units, which prevents them from separating or sliding apart. Bond beams are commonly used in residential and commercial construction projects and are an important component of the structural system.
